ANGLO SAXON POETS AND PROSE WRITERS: CAEDMON, CYNEWULF AND ALFRED ,THE KING OF WESSEX

HI READERS ! WELCOME TO MY BLOG AND THE SECTION ‘ HISTORY OF ENGLISH LITERATURE’. TODAY , WE SHALL BE STUDYING ABOUT THE REPRESENTATIVE POETS OF OLD ENGLISH CHRISTIAN POETRY .

1.CAEDMON——   (657A.D.–684A.D) HE IS THE EARLIEST ENGLISH POET KNOWN. HE WAS A NORTHUMBRIAN. HE IS ONE OF THE TWELVE ANGLO- SAXON POETS KNOWN . HE WAS A ZEALOUS MONK AND INSPIRATIONAL CHRISTIAN POET. HIS STORY IS RELATED IN “HISTORIA ECCLESIASTICA” BY  BEDE WHO DESCRIBED HIM TO BE A RELIGIOUS MEMBER OF A MONASTERY. CAEDMON’S CHIEF WORK IS “CAEDMON’S HYMN “.  HIS WORK “PARAPHRASE“( 1655) IS THE STORY OF GENESIS, EXODUS AND DANIEL.

2. CYNEWULF PRESUMABLY FLOURISHED IN THE 9TH CENTURY. HE IS ONE OF THE TWLVE OLD ENGLISH POETS KNOWN . HE WAS KNOWN FOR HIS RELIGIOUS COMPOSITIONS . HE WROTE FOUR POEM BOOKS . EXETER BOOK CONTAINS POEMS LIKE ‘JULIANA‘ AND ‘CHRIST II‘. THE VERCELLI BOOK CONTAINS POEMS ‘ELENE‘ AND ‘FATES OF THE APOSTLES‘.

3. ALFRED, THE KING OF WESSEX (849A.D.–899 A.D.) WAS THE FATHER OF ENGLISH PROSE OF 9TH CENTURY. HIS PROSE STYLE WAS DIGNIFIED AND HIGHLY LATINISED. HIS WORKS ARE—— TRANSLATIONS OF BEDE’S ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY , SOLILOQUIES OF ST. AUGUSTINE . HE INSPIRED AND ORGANISED ANGLO-SAXON CHRONICLE.
