THE BEGINNING OF NIGHTMARES-
The above given quotes from Charkes Dickens novel “A Tale of two Cities” truly and aptly describes the year of pandemic , 2020 eventhough it was written during Victorian ages describing late 18th century. Are we back to such an era where life has put a question mark on the aspirations, dreams and survival of the people ? Are we still lingering on to the question , ” TO BE OR NOT TO BE” ? Are we on the verge of comparing our lives to the people of 18th and 19th centuries , the age which didn’t have advanced technologies and better medical facilities ? Surprisingly YES. We are fighting this battle everyday with our unseen enemy , the C virus ( I prefer not taking its name. it seems now deadlier than Voldemort whose name mustn’t be taken)
THROWBACKS— Back to the beginning of the year 2020 January when we were celebrating and rejoicing at the beginning of a new year. Ushering into a new era , we were simply proud of our scientific and technological advancements . An attitude of invincibility pervaded us. Eventhough the effect of the deadly virus on people had been declared by WHO by the end of January , it hadn’t been taken seriously by many countries. We were still believing it to be a rumour or a disease that would probably not spread in our country as we had an unshakeable belief in our ancient treatment methods and medical advancements. People were still running with a mad race after power, pelf and success. They had high ambitions for themselves and had imagined plans for a prosperous future. The eastern U.P. public was busy in Magh Mela in Allahabad city. Thousand and thousands of pious travellers visit Allahabad (now Prayagraj) during this festival to seek blessings of holy river Ganges by bathing in it. U.S. President Donald Trump and his wife , Melania Trump visited India during Feb 2020 and toured the Taj Mahal, a monument of love for couples.
THE DEADLY KNOCK AT THE DOOR — We heard the footsteps of Corona virus (Covid-19 Pandemic) that was gradually, stealthily entering some countries . The virus was confirmed to be present in Spain on 31st January, 2020. Tourists had started testing positive for SARS-COV-2. As a result of lack of knowledge and seriousness , community transmissions had started by mid- February taking toll of hundreds of innocent lives. On 25th March, Spain surpassed the official death tolls in China. The underestimation of the super -deadly virus resulted in increased number of transmissions, infections, and deaths.
THE DEADEND AND THE COINING OF NEW TERMS– This phase of life led us towards a path which had only dead ends. We had to lock ourselves up in the house waiting and waiting for the virus to move away but it didn’t until it had resulted in mass deaths. Some new terms were coined that we were never acquainted with. ‘COVID’, ‘SARS’, ‘PANDEMIC’, ‘SWAB TEST’, ‘MASKS’, ‘LOCKDOWN’, ‘SANITIZERS’, ‘REPEATED HAND WASH’ etc.
HORROR FILLED IN THE AIR— All I remember the Covid years were full of deadly silence, people scared of moving out or eating anything, media full of raging videos of people dying in and outside hospitals, Hundreds and hundreds of corpses being cremated everyday. television and mobiles full of videos of people shrieking and wailing , seeking help, prayers raging in the sky, an atmosphere of utter confusion and bewilderment. People trying different ancient cleansing techniques like drinking herbal potions and camphor burning to keep the virus away. All these things and many others that created chaos and confusion. To do or not to do. To be or not to be.
IMPORTANCE OF HOUSE HELPERS- This was the time period when people actually understood the importance of people who work at the base level to make others lives comfortable. We realized how difficult and miserable our lives became in absence of maids, cooks, house helpers , the municipality workers etc. We became fed up with the on going process of cooking food, washing clothes and cleaning up home. We started cursing this covid virus and lockdown that had snatched away our freedom of going out and enjoying ourselves.
