HI READERS !

WELCOME TO THE SECTION OF BLOG NAMED’ POETRY’

In the last blog for poetry , we learned about different types of poetries. There are about 18 types of poetries . We have already studied in detail about 10 types of poems. Now let us study the remaining types of poetries.

11. EPISTLE— Epistle is a letter in verse form. It is usually written for the acquaintances and close friends by the poet. ‘ Epistle to Dr. Arbuthnot’ by Alexander Pope is an important example of epistle form. In this poem, the poet addresses a physician. It may have varied themes, moral , philosophical or sentimental.

12. HAIKU — A Japanese verse form of three unrhymed lines in which five , seven and five syllables are present. This is a very short poem which is beautifully depicted in just three line. It is full of imageries which makes its presence even more felt. Look at the following example of ‘HAIKU’ from the poet Matsuo Basho.

“The Old Pond” by Matsuo Bashō

An old silent pond

A frog jumps into the pond—

Splash! Silence again.

13. LIMERICK — It is a kind of humorous verse of five lines. In this kind of poem the first, second, and fifth lines rhyme with each other, and the third and fourth lines, which are shorter, form a rhymed couplet.

For Eg-

There once was a man from Tibet

There once was a man from Tibet

Who couldn’t find a cigarette

So he smoked all his socks,

and got chicken-pox,

and had to go to the vet. (From weareteachers.com)

14. LYRIC — Lyric is actually a song or verse which is sung with the accompaniment of a lyre ( a kind of musical instrument ). It also means a musical song used to express personal and strong emotions in a melodic way.

For Example–

Emily Dickinson, ‘THE HEART ASKS PLEASURE FIRST’.

The Heart asks Pleasure – first –
And then – Excuse from Pain –
And then – those little Anodynes
That deaden suffering …

This is the beginning lines of a short lyric poem by the famous nineteenth-century American poet Emily Dickinson (1830-86).
